Lately I've been trying to figure out different driving styles for vehicles of seldom use, such as the Celica and MR-S in order to find a car suitable to my driving style. I'm starting to lean towards the Celica because it seems to be a bit more friendly about understeer than the other cars I drive, especially with a feint and a couple erasers to manage it. It seems pretty solid on most courses but it just rips through Akina Snow like it's nothing, much like my GDB.
The MR-S seems to be a rather daunting challenge of controlling its random bursts of oversteer and severe understeer, its rain and snow performance is horrible though. It slides all over the place in Tsuchisaka and becomes almost uncontrollable, even moreso than the Hachi-Go. However, it seems to perform unusually well on Akagi and Irohazaka for some reason. Any other track seems to make it understeer fairly bad, but on Iro it actually oversteers on the hairpins. It really helps in setting up the car for the consecutive jumps, especially that tough-to-nail last jump.

Next week I might feel like starting up an 86 Levin, but I can't find any descriptions on the engine variants or their handling in general. I'm thinking the turbo/supercharger might be the most solid setup, but there's also two racing engine variants and a plain turbo setup. Perhaps someone could help me find out more info?

Edit

I took my MR-S to Happo and found it to drive rather effortlessly there. I don't know if I had a sudden change in driving style from recent videos or if the MR-S just seems to be at home on a course where understeer desirable. What's even more unusual is I took the majority of the snake hairpins cleanly, albeit a bit slower than usual. It just seems a bit odd for such a hard car to drive to flow with an even tougher course to me I suppose.

Or does the Levin really slide THAT bad on Tsuchisaka? Let's say for example against the Evo VI guy. I take a turn on a supposedly dry course and slide to the outside a lot faster than his AWD at the same speed. If I take the turns slower than normal he ends up blazing past me and faster than normal I slide into the wall. I imagine feinting the major turns would make the sliding more manageable but I tend to drive a quazi-grip style in just about any FR. I know full well it is possible to take the majority, if not the whole course in 5th gear but it seems like if I downshift in my automatic they overtake me just about every time. Another problem I have with the sliding is keeping a decent line due to all the sliding. It's damn near impossible it seems, because I try to out-in-out major turns and always slide to the outside instead of hitting the apex of the turn. I unintentionally dodge the oil spill just about every time because of this. :P

If I am Captain Ahab, then Happogahara is now my great white whale.

And Todoh Racing School can just bite me.

Please tell me just how come my 85 is actually faster going uphill as opposed to going downhill? Not only that, but it seems that the course gets more slippery on the downhill part as opposed to the uphill--which is really to be expected because there is less drag to deal with from the tires going down.

I don't even wanna know what it'd be like taking my FC to Happo... I'd paint all the walls black!

The Psychology of the Driver

One thing I take pride in myself is my ability to think "outside of the box" when it comes to racing. A racer can read all the technical aspects of every competitive machine on the market, analyze all kinds of techniques in time trials, and run time trial after time trial, and still not get it all right.

The main place that this situation creeps up and glomps a driver is when he or she is in a battle. The stress of defeating your opponent can sometimes toss all of your training and preparation--and skills--out the window. In order to maintain a grip on the road and a grip on your emotions and concentration, you have to put a degree of disassociation between you and your opponent. One such method is by returning to a comfortable state of mind while still keeping your performance at its peak: music.

Studies continue to no end to show that music has a direct effect on psyches of humans, and even plants. It has been long-tried, tested, and nigh proved true that listening to music from the renaissance, baroque, and classical musical time periods increases neural patterns in performing tasks such as studying and written scholastic tests. On an episode of Mythbusters, experiments gave a plausible conclusion that heavy metal rock music played almost continuously to green bean plants stimulated plant growth and pod development.

Over the past several time trials and battles, I have employed this method with significant results. At times I can find the atmosphere rather intruding on time trials or battles, therefore, I began to bring my own music. After choosing a course, I would set my car's settings to not play any music. Then, I would take an Initial D track of my liking from my iPod and queue it just before the race. My average times have improved by as much as 2 seconds. My battles are more fluid and less stressful than before.

I'm not saying we should make this a mandate or anything, but I do suggest we give this a try on a grander scale. We should try this on battles with each other, time trials on different cars, even real challenges against other drivers. I'm confident that, with practice and personal input and changes, we could take our driving to the next level.

FF vs. FR

mood: busy
Engineering tip for the day: Regardless of your preference, if you have two cars - one an FF and one an FR - with the same size engine, tires, and using the same type of engine oil, the FF will ALWAYS have more horsepower. Why? It is a question of efficiency. The power does not have to transfer as far in an FF vehicle or through as many interfaces as an FR. This means that if your FF has 95% efficiency for the power transfer, your FR will have approximately 92-93% efficiency. Granted, it is a small difference, as one of the top points on any engineering checklist is to get those mechanical systems as close to 99.9% efficiency as possible. Why not 100%? Because one-hundred percent efficiency is impossible, both mathematically and physically. It is a myth. Don't believe me? Ask ANY engineer worth half their body's salt.

So, why isn't the FF an all-around better vehicle than the FR? Simple. In an FF, the car's weight actually works against it. When drifting, you want your direction of thrust to point away from your direction of travel. Otherwise, you'd go halfway around the corner and slam straight into the guardrail. In drifting in an FF, you can easily keep your thrust pointing in the direction you want to go by turning the wheel. However, this leaves the back end of the vehicle to swing around almost uncontrollably. In an FR, the thrust tires actually point away from the wall, providing the counter-thrust necessary to cancel out the otherwise uncontrollable slide and turn it into a drift. It is a more powerful way to drift, but also more difficult to pull off.

The final result:
The FF is a more maneuverable vehicle, being that it provides thrust and thrust vectoring with the same tires, but it suffers on the corners because an abundance of speed leads to an abundance of rotational inertia. Rotational inertia is the FF's worst nightmare. The simple answer is to slow down, pull off a de-powered slide, and then recover when you come out the other side. It's messy, but better than trading paint with the guardrail. (Yes, just like that lame-ass PGR game. I have never seen a game with more broken drifting physics than that one.) The FR, on the other hand, requires that you spin out to the side to provide thrust away from the wall. As soon as that thrust is forthcoming, you line the car up and, lo-and-behold, you have exited the drift. The timing is critical, but all in all is a more efficient way to drift.

This is what happens when I get bored...

I admit, I have been off the racing circuit for a long time. It's what happens when you have to work for a living. I have been trying to find time to get back, with some success.

What has scared me is that I haven't had time to use my trinity of cars to improve my tactics--not even my experimental. I've found that no matter how good everyone tells you you are, you have got to stay as sharp as possible. So, I've found a new kind of training, one that I hope will take me to the more difficult downhill runs one day:

I've been testing on stock cars. No mods, no tuning, just me and the car. I've run on the Silvia S-12, the Silvia K-13, the MR2, and stock versions of the RX-7 and the RX-8. With these 5, I've taken out K.T. at Akagi dry, Ry at Akina dry, and Miki on Akina snow. What's bothered me is that my times have all been the same, and my technique is still flawed.

It makes a difference between timed runs and battles, as well. Timed runs, you have to stick your corners and keep your line on the straightaways. Battles rely more on instinct, ingenuity, and not watching the rear-view mirror all the time, but you still have to remember your line.

One observation I've found is that all of my driving has been on FR systems. It pains me to say this, but I'm wondering how much my technique would change if I went to an FF drive system. You have less control of your back end, and it's possible to fish-tail much easier than an FR, but with an FF you can pull yourself through a corner, and sometimes the loose end can actually help you improve your line. There's so much more I could state between the two; I'll save that for another time. Keno will be able to explain the more mechanical features of each; I just stick to driving techniques.

The most popular FFs--and the most common--are Honda Civics. If I'm going to learn about this and test my theory, I think I'll start with them.
